    SOP - Statement of Purpose

    The Statement of Purpose (SOP) or personal statement (PS) sometimes can also be known as Letter of Motivation (LOM) is the only most important document which explains your personal and professional journey to the admission committee.

    Generally, universities ask you to send an SOP/LOM alongwith your university applications to outline your interests, goals, eligibility, and why you are so keen to study a specific course in a specific university. The SOP/LOM/PS is given huge weight-age by the admission committee and a candidate must work to create a unique letter explaining his story in his own words. Copying it from the Google would surely lead to the rejection of candidate’s application.

    What all are included in an SOP made for German Universities

    It usually a 500-1000 words document covering your academic achievements, reasons for opting to study in Germany over India. A LOM/SOP is a mandatory requirement for students applying for admissions in PG degree programs in Germany. Students from outside EU countries are required to submit an LOM/SOP via uni-assist.

    The major pointers to be considered while drafting your SOP/LOM:

    • Carefully see the university word requirements which are usually between 500 and 1,000.
    • Give importance to academic qualifications.
    • Only briefly explain the co-curricular achievements.
    • Explain all your skill sets, work experience, internships and technical certificates acquired in India.
    • Give importance to reasons behind applying for a specific course / university / country.
    • Explain why you are the best candidate for this program and your personal and professional goals after the program completion.
    • Explain how would this program help you to make a meaningful contribution in the development of your country.
    • Your SOP/LOM is a different document than your CV, so it should not look like a copy of it.
    • Conclude your draft strongly explaining your eagerness to join the specific course and university.
