Ausbildung: Vocational Training in Germany

‘Ausbildung’ is the German term for an Apprenticeship in various professions, a form of a vocational training program. With an ‘Ausbildung’ (full title: ‘Berufsausbildung’) you get a state-controlled degree as a skilled worker providing huge perspectives for living and working in Germany even if you are a citizen of a non-EU-country like India.

Ausbildung (also called “vocational training”) is a formal educational qualification in the area of blue collar professions like sales person, painter, carpenter, nurse, or mechanic. Currently there are more than 320 professions for which you can do an apprenticeship. An Ausbildung takes 3-4 years of training in business and school and finishes with the degree of a skilled worker. This degree provides good chances for
foreigners from all over the world to get a permanent work position in Germany. The system of vocational training (in German: “Berufsausbildungen”) in Germany is unique: The multi-year education program has no fees and provides monthly payments.

Ausbildung – the Facts

Over 5 lacs new apprenticeships (Ausbildung) contracts are completed every year by various companies in Germany. As per Statistisches Bundesamt, 5,21,900 foreign persons have signed up for new training / apprenticeship positions in 2018, which is more than twice in number when compared to 2009.

AREAS where Ausbildung is Available

Once accepted to one of these programs as an Azubi or Ausbildender by any of the German companies, your training under Ausbildung will be divided into two parts:-

  1. Three days of Practical on the job training every week with your affiliated German company where you'll be on a work placement as an apprentice.
  2. Two days of Theoretical and Conceptual training every week at the vocational training school, also known as Berufsschule in the German language, where you will be attending training classes.

Ausbildung Requirements

  • All Vocational Training Schools use German Language for
    training and examination purposes
  • Minimum requirement of B2 Level

10+2 grade school examination passed (Min 60% marks) certificate in any specialization

  • No age limit
  • Most ausbildung candidates will be in the age group of 18-26 yrs
  • Nursing care applicants over 40 years of age may also apply
  • Curriculum Vitae with precise educational details
  • 12th marksheet and well written cover letter
  • School Leaving Certificate (original / certified copies)
  • May require sufficient amount of money (863 Euros/month) for cost of
    living in Germany for any period prior to the start of your Ausbildung
  • (1-3 months) Health insurance for at least for 1st year or for period prior to the start of your vocational training
